From the month of December 2011, CalArts’ ESP is honored to have dutch-musician/ installation artist, Thomas Ankersmit in residency with us. Notable for his performance with the Serge modular Synthesizer, Thomas returns to where the Serge was first developed, to work with the “Black Serge” at CalArts (originally customized by Darrel Johansen and recently expertly refurbished by Kevin Fortune).
On February 11th 2012, he will be premiering new works that uses samples mainly from the “Black Serge” recorded during his residency, as well as live materials from his own contemporary model of the Serge Modular Synthesizer at CEAIT 2012, at REDCAT. When asked if the CalArts’ Black Serge will appear live with him, Ankersmit explained that he will be combining pre-recorded parts from the CalArts serge sessions with his own live serge and the Black Serge stays at CalArts. He also added that these samples from his CalArts sessions were often re-arranged in max/msp, using the patch that he worked on together with two of CalArts’ ESP MFA students – Jingyin He (Jon), and Kameron Christopher.
